Upon Jesus’ death on the cross, the beautiful, strongly woven veil (curtain) of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. This was an extraordinary event because the seemingly impenetrable veil was so thick, long and wide. It was so massive and heavy that horses or teams of oxen, tied to each side, would be challenged trying to tear it. It separated the inner sanctuary, known as the Holy of Holies, from the rest of the temple. Since this was the place where God’s glorious presence appeared, the only one allowed behind the veil was the High Priest, bearing the blood of a sacrificed animal. This animal was a shadow of the once-and-for-all, complete and satisfying sacrificial atonement of Christ, for the sins of the world. The ripped veil proclaimed the way to God had been flung wide open! This protected, off-limits place was now accessible, exclaiming that whoever accepts Jesus as Savior will be granted full pardon from their sins, and have unlimited access to God’s throne of grace; Hebrews 4:16. All who receive Him become temples of the Living God, housing His precious Holy Spirit; I Corinthians 6:19. How wonderful knowing His powerful, glorious presence now resides in us, instead of behind the veil! All praise to an Amazing God and Resurrected Lord!
